On God’s and Grandma’s way of dealing with money …

February 25th, 2008 | by admin |

Dave Ramsey often says on his shows that he teaches God’s and Grandma’s ways of dealing with money, “only we keep our teeth in.”

There is no doubt on the God part. Some people who take every syllable of the Bible very seriously often ignore Proverbs 22:7 which states that “the borrower is slave to the lender.” As Dave often reminds his flock, nowhere in the Bible is debt used for good. Every single time it is mentioned it is negative, a curse, something to be avoided. Any time you can cut another “master” out of your life, this is good, especially if it’s Master Card.

On the Grandma’s side of the equation, this is mostly true. When it comes to my wife and I, we are 3/4 on the Grandma Equation. 3 Grandmas were like Dave often talks about, very frugal, very thoughtful about money, don’t buy something , you can’t afford it, if you can’t pay for it. The 4th grandma (and grandpa) were Normal American, broke leveraged up to their eyeballs, if they saw something they wanted, they bought it. They deserved stuff because “they breathed air.” The sad part of this story is that these were the one set of grandparents that came from some real money. Just one generation back and this family thrived and should have changed their family tree for generations.

Somehow, the Cape Cod or wherever beach houses didn’t make it past this particular grandma. The older these grandparents got, the less touch of reality that they had with finances. People will loan money to and sell truck loads of crap to the elderly. Somehow, giving old people, who are increasingly more feeble and gone in the mind, credit cards to shop like drunken sailors, doesn’t seem like a great business plan, but that is exactly what credit card companies did in this case.

Old people + Credit Cards + QVC = Not the kind of Grandma Dave talks about on his show.
